“During the final days of rehearsals, we all cry a lot.”

“If the bees disappear from the face of the Earth, humanity will have only four years left.” These days, alongside the Serbian reality we are so deeply immersed in, social media bombards us with images of Palestinian children. Their parents mark their hands and feet so they can be identified after they are killed. Suddenly, the entire world feels like Saturn devouring his children. It feels as though chronological time no longer matters—the Weimar Republic from von Horváth’s novel feels intimately close, even though a century has passed. It is right here, yet no one sees it.

Universities are raided again. Professors are humiliated. Young people are beaten. I want to scream from sheer powerlessness and a heavy sense of injustice. I want to repeat the same lessons we never seem to learn.

I return to Stockholm in early July on an early morning flight. Sitting at my kitchen table, I start crying again.”
