Hinkemann tries to find his place in life after his time as a soldier. But he is haunted by violent memories and the world he encounters has difficulty handling him and taking his problems seriously. His post-war life turns into a rollercoaster of horror that perpetuates the posttraumatic experiance of a soldier in any given war of any time – particularily our time. Ernst Toller’s tragedy from 1923, adapted by Danish-Swedish playwright Tom Silkeberg, becomes an absurd play about carrying a trauma, about society’s inability to handle it, and about the impossibility of love in such a reality.
